Pioneer’s Writing Center supports student build critical thinking and writing skills as well as write their best possible research paper
The Pioneer Research Program
Pioneer Academics gives high school students the chance to conduct original, authentic research with top university professors. This is made possible through Pioneer’s unique academic system. The Pioneer Writing Center is an essential piece of this academic system, as it allows Pioneer scholars to grow as writers and produce a high-caliber final paper. While Pioneer scholars are bright and highly motivated, they are not expected to write a full-length academic research paper without guidance.
Pioneer scholars submit a series of drafts to the Pioneer Writing Center, where tutors review their papers and provide guidance related to grammar, word choice, organization and more. Complying to Pioneer’s academic ethical requirements, Writing Center tutors are not allowed to edit papers; instead they provide detailed comments and examples that teach Pioneer scholars how to fix errors on their own.

APPLICATION DEADLINE EXTENDED TO APRIL 15, 2020
Foundation for Teaching Economics
With the situation regarding COVID-19 changing hourly, we have changed application requirements and deadlines for our summer programs.
1) The deadline to apply to all FTE programs has been extended to April 15, 2020.
2) With schools closing nationwide, we understand that obtaining letters of recommendation and transcripts will be challenging. Effective immediately, we are waiving the application requirement for a letter of recommendation and high school transcripts.

FTE Summer Programs and COVID-19
The Foundation for Teaching Economics (FTE) is closely monitoring the outbreak of COVID-19. FTE is in close contact with our campus partners. Based on current conditions, all programs are proceeding as planned. Should a campus closure require the cancellation of a program, full refunds of the program fee will be given. For participants who voluntarily withdraw, refunds will be made according to the FTE stated refund policy and schedule.

Highlighting Community Service in College Applications
Students and parents frequently ask us how they can highlight their community service in college applications. While community service is not required for admission to highly selective colleges, it is definitely one way to show colleges your involvement in your community, your values and the way you choose to spend your time. Here are five tips to consider as you decide whether and how to highlight your community service in college applications:
Go Beyond the Minimum Required
Some high schools require that students perform community service, sometimes with a minimum number of hours. Given that you will first be compared to the other students at your school, if you apply to the same colleges, you should think about completing more than the minimum number of hours, which will be viewed as “checking the box” for community service, but little more. Need a Job after College? A Career Center Adviser or IEC can help!
Four years of college can fly before a student realizes it. By junior and senior year, that fateful question becomes ever prominent: what will I do after college?
For most students, taking the time to work closely with the career center adviser on campus can make this prospect less daunting. Students should visit their career center and connect with an adviser at least by January of their freshman year. This is an invaluable step to gain assistance in finding summer internships, employment and even advice on working or studying abroad. All these steps strengthen the resume and help students learn more about professions for consideration. Working with an adviser early and consistently each year of college builds a relationship that will pay off with big dividends by senior year, when assistance with the job search is most critical.
